Fire Management in the Northwest Territories
|
The Fire Management section
is responsible for the prevention
, detection
, monitoring and suppression
of forest fires in the Northwest Territories.
Fire Management includes prescribed fire for the purposes of forest
fire management and natural resource management objectives.
Fire Management is delivered at Regional level through the ENR offices,
and coordinated at the Territorial level through the Territorial Forest
Fire Response Centre Duty Officer located in Fort Smith. Forest fire
management decisions are made in accordance with the Forest
Fire Management Policy and the Forest
Protection Act of the NWT.
As part of a co-ordinated response to wildfire, fire crew units and
other suppression resources are positioned in most of the communities
and regions of the Northwest Territories. Fixed-Wing Air-tanker and
helicopter resources are also located strategically within the forested
area of the NWT. These resources may be moved around the NWT
on short notice depending upon risk and fire danger ratings. These
resources may also be mobilized to assist in other provinces within
Canada and in the USA, as a result of the Mutual Aid Resource Sharing
Agreement, to which the NWT is a signatory. ( See CIFFC).
The collection and analysis of weather plays an instrumental role
in decision-making for fire management and forest fire responses.
Weather information is collected from stations across the NWT and
compiled by the staff at the Fire centre in Fort smith. A meteorologist
analyses weather information and patterns and provides reports to
the duty officers on a daily basis which assists them in fire response
decision making.
The Forest Management Division operates a Territorial Warehouse, which
holds and coordinates and guides the stocking of forest fire management
and other equipment in support of forest fire management programs
across the NWT.
