We provide air operation and airtanker support
to the Forest Management Division in the Northwest Territories.
The Forest Management Division has on contract 6 airtankers, 4
birddog aircraft and 5 rotary wing aircraft. All have primary bases
but they can and often relocate should the fire situation warrant
it.
We have reciprocal border agreements with Alberta, Yukon, Saskatchewan
and British Columbia to provide additional airtankers if needed.
The airtanker fleet is the responsibility of the Forest Management
Division located in Fort Smith, NT. Strategic decisions regarding
airtanker alerts and positioning are made by the Forest Management's
Territorial Duty Officer in consultation with the Managers of Forests
in each Region.
Aviation Services is responsible for the procurement of long term,
short term or casual aircraft resources for the Division. As well,
we procure aircraft for the Regional offices for their fire program.
There are five Regional offices across the north and they are: South
Slave, North Slave, Deh Cho, Sahtu and Inuvik.
Aviation Services is also responsible for operation of six airtanker
bases across the NWT. These tanker bases are located in Fort Smith,
Hay River, Fort Simpson, Yellowknife, Norman Wells and Inuvik.
